Spring 2018 - ArtStarts in Schools grant for Selkirk Annex

This school year the Selkirk Annex was awarded a grant from ArtStarts in Schools to bring Indigenous and Non-Indigenous artists together with the support of the Selkirk Annex PAC.


Since 1996, ArtStarts has supported educators, artists, families and young people by offering a broad range of programs, services and resources. They are a charitable organization that seeks to expand the role of arts in education for the benefit of British Columbia's young people.

 This blog will document the children's experience in this four part process of having guest Artists at the school, doing art in the classrooms, and also a final mural outdoors. The ArtStarts in Schools grant covers 70% of the materials and the artist fees, with the PAC fundraising for the remaining 30% as well as donating their time to organize the project, write the grant, and get the supplies.

 The artists will be announced in a blog post shortly...stay tuned.

Painting the Animals - Day 2

We talked about paint and colours, and mixed our own colours with the artist palette. The children thought about their drawings of animals and what colours they needed to mix to make their creatures come to life.  Working with their buddies they slowly started to paint. Some used First Nation art as inspiration and others used imagination. Together they started to fill in the wood panel.  Really great colour mixing! These reptiles and snakes started to pop off the wood!  It was so nice to see everyone interested and engaged in their animal paintings. Then we had to let them dry until the next week when we did the final touches.  I really love how they used so many colours, yet they didn't lose the animals that they were painting.  These three worked super together and came up with this mythical dragon and even painted the background and clouds.               I s...

Outlining and Finishing the Paintings - DAY 3

Here is a gallery of all the work the children did in the three times that we met. The last day we finished by outlining our paintings with silver, bronze and black sharpies. What a great accomplishment! We will be sealing them and installing them at the school garden shortly!  Thank you Selkirk annex teachers and students for the opportunity to make Spirit Animals with you as part of ArtStarts this year!
